VIET NGO

Biography

A Pioneer of 1980s–90s Land Art and Environmental Art

Viet Ngo is an environmental infrastructure engineer specializing in water resources and hydraulics, bringing over five decades of professional practice across 25 countries. Within his working methodology, machinery manufacturing and infrastructure engineering function simultaneously as ecological problem-solving tools and as a lexicon of contemporary art. The inherent duality in Ngo's oeuvre stems from a dynamic tension between the utilitarian and the artistic, function and symbol, technical rationality and aesthetic sensibility.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Viet Ngo emerged as a pioneering figure in Land Art and Environmental Art. Leveraging technical and technological capabilities, he intervened directly in topographies, soil conditions, hydrological flows, and native flora to construct "living sculptures"—aesthetic forms that evolve organically with the rhythms of nature. Here, spatial planning, physical labor, technological innovation, and landscape preservation cease to exist in isolation; instead, they converge into a systematic, collective mode of production. Art theorists such as Linda Weintraub, Sue Spaid, and Suzanne Lacy recognize this practice as a pivotal evolution within Land Art and Environmental Art of the era, marking a paradigm shift from individual authorship toward a corporate-scale model.

Since 2010, following his return to Vietnam and the founding of Vietstar Corporation to address the critical municipal waste crisis of the Ho Chi Minh City megacity, Ngo’s focus has pivoted toward Reclamation Art, engaging recycled materials and restorative interventions within landscapes and ecosystems. In this phase, industrial debris and consumer waste become primary sites of artistic generation. Mechanical carcasses battered after processing millions of tons of refuse enter a new lifecycle, transmuting into kinetic and static sculptures. Situated at the intersection of urbanism, industrialization, and civic life, these reconfigured machines generate new strata of meaning, evolving into visual artifacts and discursive units that prompt profound meditation on the complex nexus of humanity, material cultures, production processes, and ecological futures.

Awards & Achievement

Viet Ngo’s career has not followed the well-worn path of a traditional artist (one built through accumulating awards from art competitions or recognition from art councils). Instead, he has been recognized through honors bestowed on notable public figures, groundbreaking patents, and acknowledgment from the international academic and technical-art community:

  • Minnesota Business Hall of Fame (2010)
  • TCB 100 / Person of the Year Award (Twin Cities Business, USA)
  • Member and Former Chairman, MN/ACEC Legislative Committee
  • Member, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
  • Member, National Academy of Sciences,  Committee for Measuring and Improving Infrastructure, Washington, DC
  • Inductee, Minnesota Business Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Delegate accompanying three U.S. Secretaries of Commerce on global trade missions in Africa, Asia, and Europe, representing the U.S. Environmental Industry.
  • Author and investor in the inaugural wastewater treatment BOT project in Guangzhou, China, a groundbreaking Sino-U.S. joint venture.
